WHEN WE WERE KINGS
It was 1970/71 season, living in Noble Park, when I met my new neighbour, Bert Thurgood. “Do you play cricket?” he asked. His team, Carnegie Methodist CC was one man short. That is how I remember my initial connection with the Club. As it turned out I became the 11th Club player & member, they were so short of players. After the first day of play, I was totally convinced that this was THE Club for me, even though I was only one of two “Aussies” in the team. My memory is not so good these days, but I know in my heart that I loved every minute of playing for this Club and my teammates. My greatest pleasure during my 46 years association with this Club is the endearing friendships forged, which continue to this day.
I loved playing at CUCC because this was a family club. I joined because a few mates played there and pretty quickly, I got a more mates that I call dear friends for the rest of my life. I only played about 4 seasons and it has been over 10 years since I last played but we still catch up as a group and share stories and laughs.
Thank you for all the glorious memories that will stay with me forever.
I am in my 37 year at the club. I have done it all , played for some of the clubs great Captains. Played with some of the great Bowlers and Batsmen of the club. Captained Premiership teams. Shared the high and Lows. Played on winning and losing premiership team. Been on the committee for over 15 years as committeemen, social secretary and now the pinnacle of this great Club as President. This club is not just a Cricket club . It can be part of your life (in a good way). It is up to to you what you take out of it , that makes you a better person and creates friendship that last forever.
